The gate you received is unassembled, tied by a belt. As installation begins, you will notice a gap (it was not broken).Do not cut the belt before you finish installing the gate , it will help you install the gate easily.Place the gate at openings, rotate 4 bolts until the space between the handle is within 0.06″. (Through reaction force the gap you saw will disappear.)
